Project Overview

A leading global medical device manufacturer partnered with DesignPro Automation to develop a precise, efficient laser marking solution for their R&D department. The result was a compact, versatile system that exceeded safety standards while delivering exceptional marking quality.

The Challenge

Our client develops life-changing medical devices including cardiac and neurological implants at their Irish facility. During new product development, they recognised the need to maintain the same high standard of laser marking in R&D testing as in their production lines. This identification marking is essential for features like branding, batch numbers, part numbers, and tracking elements.

They faced several challenges:

  • Limited floor space in their R&D lab
  • Flexibility to mark multiple products and dimensions
  • Adherence to strict compliance and safety requirements
  • Easy access for multiple R&D engineers

Our Solution

We developed a specialised laser marking enclosure with an integrated class 4 laser that perfectly balanced these needs through several innovative features. Understanding space constraints, we created a compact benchtop design measuring just 600mm in width and 800mm in depth, complemented by a space-saving side-mounted laptop arm that eliminated the need for additional workspace.

The system’s flexibility stems from its adjustable breadboard base, which accommodates products of varying heights and includes a universal mounting system for diverse product fixtures. This versatility allows for multiple marking capabilities on a single product, making it ideal for complex R&D requirements.

Safety and compliance were a key consideration in our design. The enclosure incorporates:

  • A large viewable class 4 laser safety window.
  • An integrated SICK safety PLC system.
  • Keyence door safety interlock.
  • SMC vacuum sensor connected for extraction detection.
  • All components CE certified with technical documentation provided.

For seamless operation, we simplified the user interface to a straightforward USB laptop connection, removing the need for complex IT integration while ensuring easy access for the entire R&D team.

Impact and Results

This fully integrated solution delivers superior quality assurance through precise, durable marking capabilities. It consistently produces clear serial numbers, 2D barcodes, and logos, ensuring reliable product traceability throughout the development cycle.

On the compliance front, the enclosure meets all current safety standards, featuring PLd Category 3 certified door interlocks and an integrated fume extraction system. This comprehensive approach to safety and compliance gives our clients confidence in their marking processes while protecting their operators.
